Kabelo Gwamanda, the former mayor of Johannesburg, has been cleared of fraud charges related to a funeral policy scam. The charges, which dated back to 2011, alleged that Gwamanda defrauded several Soweto residents.
Gwamanda’s troubles began last October when he was arrested in connection with the scam. The allegations centered around his company, Ithemba Lama Afrika, which sold funeral policies to unsuspecting residents.
A victim came forward in January, opening a case with Protea Glen police, claiming to have been conned by Gwamanda’s company. The investigation revealed that Gwamanda operated the business illegally in 2012 before disappearing with clients’ money.
The former mayor’s career has been marred by controversy. He was fired by the city’s new Mayor, Dada Morero, last month and replaced by Patriotic Alliance (PA) councillor, Tebogo Nkonkou.
