Nearly three years after the tragic killing of South African music icon Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka, police have made a major breakthrough in the investigation. Four suspects, including alleged hitmen and the suspected mastermind, have been arrested in Gauteng.
The arrests were carried out on Monday afternoon through a joint operation between the South African Police Service’s Political Killings Task Team and the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit. According to National Police Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, three of the suspects are believed to have carried out the assassination, while the fourth is suspected of having orchestrated the deadly hit.
Sefoka was gunned down in a hail of bullets in November 2022, a murder that shocked fans and the entertainment industry alike. The firearm believed to have been used in the killing has since been recovered and linked to several other murders.
“All four suspects are now in police custody and will be appearing in court soon,” said Mathe. “This is a significant development, and we hope it brings some measure of closure to DJ Sumbody’s family and loved ones.”
Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola praised the task teams involved, calling the arrests a pivotal moment in the pursuit of justice for the slain artist.
